Late Arrivals and Absences

A child arriving at school late (after the 8:20 a.m. bell) must first report to the office for correction of attendance records. Students who arrive after 8:20 a.m. will be marked tardy.

Absence Notification Procedures
If your child is either going to be absent for the entire day or late for any reason, we ask that you call the school office attendance line which is an answering machine (703-239-4040). This line is available 24 hours a day. You may also send email to KingsGlenES.Attendance@fcps.edu. In the body of the email please include: the child's name, the teacher's name, your relationship to the child, and the reason for the student's absence.

Parents will be contacted whenever a child is marked absent by his/her teacher and there has been no prior parent notification. This system is used as a safeguard to assure both parents and school that the child does, indeed, arrive at school after he/she leaves home.

A written excuse should be given to your child's teacher by your child upon their return to school.
FCPS regulation 2234 requires that any child who is absent from school for 15 consecutive days or more be withdrawn officially from our rolls. Upon the child's return, the parent must re-enroll him/her.

Receiving Homework During Absences
If you desire homework for your child, please contact the school office in the morning, giving the name of the student who can take the assignment home to your child. A note brought in the morning serves the same purpose and enables the teacher to use available time during the day to compile information. If you wish to come in and pick up your child's make-up work, please call by 10:00 a.m. and the homework will be ready for you in the office by 3:00 p.m. It is expected that all work missed during an absence will be made up as soon as possible following the child's return to school. FCPS policy allows one day of make-up for each day of excused absence. When a child is expected to be absent due to illness for an extended period of time, the school should be notified so that provisions may be made for the student to receive a "homebound" instructional program.
