The ESOL program this year has approximately 75 students enrolled. We have students from many different countries speaking a variety of languages. We also have varying degrees of English proficiencies within our program. For that reason, each student becomes a kind of teacher helping those students who are less proficient than himself. Each student has something to share with another whether it be more oral fluency or better reading or writing skills. The partnership seems to benefit everyone. Since Kings Glen is undergoing renovation, we decided our ESOL program might also benefit from some reconstruction. This year all students are in their mainstream classroom for instruction in Math, Science, and Social Studies. Some are pulled out for help in speaking English and extra instruction in reading and writing. Many students remain in the mainstream classroom for the whole day with the classroom teacher and the ESOL teacher conferring about their progress or coming in to assist in the classroom. Reading is a large part of our day in ESOL. We read silently, we buddy read, and we listen to read alouds. We read a variety of books. Some books are chosen by the teacher and others are picked by the students. We connect writing to our reading efforts by keeping a reading journal. In this journal we respond in a variety of ways to what we have read.
Writing is the most difficult task, but we have learned to help each other by finding a friend who will listen and give suggestions to help us improve our writing. We use journal writing to increase our vocabularies and to improve our spelling. We also have writing workshop where we choose our own topics.
Technology may be the part of our day we enjoy the most. Even students with limited skills in English can work at the computer. We have several different programs to develop our skills in oral language, reading, and writing in English.
