A person with a learning disability is one with average to above average intelligence, displaying weakness in one or more academic area. Students who receive services in the learning disabilities program must demonstrate a severe discrepancy between ability and achievement in one or more of the following areas: Oral Expression, Listening Comprehension, Written Expression, Basic Reading Skills, Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Calculation, Mathematical reasoning. They also exhibit a disorder in one or more of the basics cognitive processes involved in understanding or using spoken /written language. A processing disorder causes significant difficulty in the acquisition and the use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, or mathematical abilities.

The learning disabilities program at Kings Glen encourages collaboration of general and special education staff and parents. We develop our program each year based on the needs of students. The various models of instruction we use are collaborative teaching, pullout for individualized instruction, or small group instruction. Our program provides several instructional opportunities: general education instruction during the day with instruction on IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals through small groups in or out of the general education setting, general education instruction as appropriate with emphasis on IEP goals outside the general education setting, When planning our program each year, we look at what is the best setting for each student and his/her individual needs. For further information go to FCPS Special Education.

Instead of sowing seeds of knowledge,
They sow the seeds of anger.
When it comes the time for reaping
And they get briars not flowers
They groan
"What is wrong with the soil?"
