The mathematics curriculum
stresses the use of computation, estimation and logical
reasoning to solve problems. Topics covered include
geometry, measurement, operations, (fractions, decimals and
whole number), patterns, functions, pre-algebra,
probability, data analysis, and statistics. Tools such as
manipulatives, calculators and computers are used when
appropriate to the instructional goals. Students are also
introduced to basic algebraic expressions and equations. To
sharpen mental math skills, students participate in the
annual Challenge 24 contest. Sixth graders practice their
math skills by playing probability games and
Challenge 24. A student uses technology to
graph data that was gathered from the class.
Labeling axis, comparing data, and finding mean,
median, and range of the data are among the
activities presented to the students. Here the student presents her
data to the class and discusses all the components
of a well constructed graph. Students gather together to
share ideas, information, and give support to each
other during an assigned math activity. Peer teaching sometimes offers
students a different perspective on new concepts.
Here, the class is instructed in a new skill
presented by a classmate using the overhead
projector. Students learn how to interpret
data as they collaborate on what collecting data
and graphing is all about. |
