 SOCIAL STUDIES

The history, geography, civics and economics of our country are the focus of social studies. Using trade books, videos, textbook, reference materials, software and simulation activities, students explore the time period from the discovery of the United States through the Civil War. Art and music lessons also reflect concepts studied in social studies, allowing students to experience the time period through many different avenues. Students also participate in the National Geography Bee.

Students are creating mind maps comparing the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies.

Students are reading about each explorer, gaining background knowledge.

Each week the class uses USA Studies Weekly to apply reading strategies to answer questions in the paper.

Using National Geographic Explorer magazine, students learn about early mapping of the Americas

At the beginning of the year we made these flip chart folders to help each student learn the 50 states and capitals.

Every two weeks, five states are added to the map. We are learning the state and capital and the location of each state. We will know all 50 by January!
