Literacy Philosophy
The language arts
program at Kings Glen Elementary School involves
instruction and guidance as a child travels on the
road to adult literacy. The students are immersed
in reading, writing, listening, speaking,
technology, and video literacy as parts of the
daily literacy program. A large collection of
multiple copy trade books, at various levels are
the main basis for our reading program. All
teachers plan lessons to meet the individual needs
of their students. They teach in combinations of
whole group and flexible guided reading groups to
meet curriculum goals. Many reading strategies are
used including Literature Circles, Guided Reading,
9 Good Habits, and Strategies That Work with the
use of fiction and non-fiction
selections.
Writing workshop
creates an environment for children to explore all
genres of writing. We emphasize the five step
writing process which includes planning, drafting,
revising, editing and final copy. In addition, the
students are well prepared for the 5th
grade Standards of
Learning
writing test using rubrics and anchor papers
provided by the State of Virginia and the NCS
software.
Reading aloud to
children is critical to their development as
readers. It helps to expand the children's
imagination and extends to them expanding
experiences. Teachers read aloud daily in the
classroom and a read aloud parent program is
sponsored by the school.
Guest artists,
authors, and business partners are brought to the
school each year to share their talents with our
students. Authors such as David Wisneiski, Mary
Downing Hahn, and others have shared their
expertise with our students. Dr. Seuss's birthday
on March 2nd is always a day for celebration and
continual read alouds throughout the
building.
